7 Tips For A Healthy Nighttime Routine

Looking for healthy and practical ways for winding down and closing down the day and preparing for tomorrow. These 7 tips will help you sleep better and wake feeling fresh and ready to face a new day.

I’m writing this as much for me as for you! Let’s chat about how to create a healthy nighttime routine that will set you up for a great night’s sleep and a productive day! I’m doubling my efforts to follow these simple ideas that are all the best practices for being healthy and successful!

There are many evenings I fall into bed exhausted after a long day of work or just too much late-night tv watching. And there are lots of mornings I get up at 3:00 am and can’t fall back to sleep! Not good! So, I’m changing my and creating a healthy nighttime routine! Here are 8 things I’m doing every night before I go to bed!

Here are some smart things to do before you go to bed!

Spend 10 Minutes Putting Things Away

Send just a few minutes tidying up the downstairs before bed. Put everything back in place. Fluff the pillows, clean off table surfaces, and put away magazines and books.

Put all things that need to go upstairs in a laundry basket and carry them up with you when you go to bed!

It’s so nice to come down to a tidy home the next am!

 Review Tomorrow’s Schedule

calendar and computer to help create a nighttime routine

Take a look at your schedule for the following day. Make a list of the top 3 things to get done! Note all scheduled appointments.

I really needed to start reviewing my next day the evening before! Then I don’t feel like I’m forgetting something! This is such a great idea! It gives me peace of mind that I have a handle on all my appointments for the next day.

I usually check the calendar on my phone after dinner.

 Sort A Load Of Laundry

Sort 1 load of laundry and put it by your bedroom door. In the morning take it with you when you go to get a cup of coffee or tea! Throw that load in on your way to the kitchen! When I consistently do this I have no laundry pile up! And I love the feeling of a closet of clean ready to wear clothes!

Here’s another thing I do at night, but I did not put it on the list. I like to fold clothes and put them away so my laundry baskets are empty.

This works great when Bobby and I settle for a movie or tv show after dinner!

Clean Your Sink

clean sink is one of the nightly routines that we all should do

My biggest pet peeve is facing dirty dishes in the sink from the night before. Or cold dishwater, YUCK! Even worse!

Make a point to clean your sink with a fabulous smelling organic cleanser every evening and you will be happy to meet your sink the next am!

Here’s a recipe for a wonderful smelling organic sink cleanser! I found this recipe on CLEAN MAMA. You will love this site!

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil (or any other essential oil)
  • 10 drops “purification” essential oil (or any other essential oil)
  • Castile Soap
  • shaker top jar.

Combine the baking soda and essential oils. Put the scrub in a mason jar. Instead of a lid cut out a piece of cardstock to fit as a lid and punch 4 holes in the top. Sprinkle the scrub in the sink along with a tiny squirt of Castile soap or dish detergent and scrub it with a sink scrubber. Rinse well. Your sink will be clean and fresh smelling. And so will your kitchen!

Take Care Of Your Body

fluffy towels

Brush your teeth, floss, wash, and hydrate your face. Use lotion on your body and pay attention to your hands, neck, and feet.

Go to bed feeling pampered and smelling pretty. Spray your bed pillow with a little lavender spray for sweet dreams!

I also like to diffuse essential oils in my bedroom at night. I’ve been loving geranium and orange or lavender and just a drop of spearmint.

Take Your Supplements And Meds

Don’t forget to take care of the inside of your body too! Take nightly meds and any vitamins or supplements that work better at night. Make taking your vitamins at the same time part of your nighttime routine! Maybe before you brush your teeth.

I take my multivitamins at night because they are a little too rough on my stomach in the morning.

 Read Before Going To Bed

Reading is one part of my nighttime routine I really look forward to. I just pick up my book or magazine where I left off the night before!

Try to unplug from all electronic devices though. The light in them stimulates the brain and can disturb your sleep.

Save your magazines till bedtime!

Reading is my favorite way to unwind! Even if it is just a few minutes try to read something before bed!

 Pray

Don’t forget to be thankful for the day and talk to your Father in heaven before you go to bed! Praying brings me such peace!

I bet there is something you do every night before you go to bed that might not be on the nighttime routine list… please share! Why don’t you join in the effort to set up a nightly routine that is healthy and smart!

Don’t forget to pin this for later!

  1. Thanks Yvonne. I try to start winding down about 9:00 so that I am in bed by 9:30. I have battery operated candles that turn on and greet me in the late evening creating a soothing bedroom. After completing my skincare routine, I put a couple drops of a calming essential oil on my wrists and read a novel which takes me away to another world.

  2. Your suggestions are so on point! I have always ended my day by looking at what I have scheduled for the next day. Another thing which saves me so much time is to look at the latest weather report, then I choose my clothing, shoes, and jewelry for the next day. This has been my habit for over 40 years, and it has served me VERY well!

    1. Great tips about looking at the weather for the next day. Thanks, Melissa for this helpful tip.

Great tips – A couple of additional things that help me start the day off right are to prepare the coffee pot and deciding what I’m going to wear tomorrow. I’m not as faithful as I should be, but I also have a book filled with God’s Promises beside my bed and I like to read a couple before turning out the light and a couple as soon as I wake up.
