Learning The Names Of God, Part III
Learning the Name Of God will help you to know God's character better, call on Him in a more intimate way and see Him as He portrays Himself. Knowing God's name is a faith builder.
One of my favorite things to study about God is His names. God, in the Bible, reveals His character and who He is through His names. His names are very important. In ancient times a person’s NAME was associated with their character. And learning the names of God will help you in many aspects of your life.
Even today our names carry with them mental images of who we are and what we do. So, when God reveals Himself through a specific name we get to know something very special about Him. NAMES OF GOD is a three-part series to learn all of God’s revealed names in the Old Testament. Today we will look at the last four names of God…
It might be a good idea to go back to THE NAMES OF GOD, PART I, and
THE NAMES OF GOD, PART2, to review the names JEHOVAH and LORD. It will help you understand today’s Sunday Scriptures much better.
Here are the last four names of God in the Old Testament…
JEHOVAH SABAOTH (yeh-ho-vah sa’ ot) THE LORD OF HOSTS
Jehovah Sabaoth is used 285 times in the Old Testament.
Jehovah Sabaoth means God Of The Hosts.
When you think of the word “hosts” you should think of the word armies. Both heavenly and earthly. God who is the sovereign and only king of heaven and earth shows His complete control as LORD OF HOSTS.
The armies of angels Jehovah Saboath order are not cherub baby angels, but fierce and strong warriors.
When you have no fight left in you and need help call on Jehovah Saboath!
JEHOVAH RAAH (yeh-ho-vah’ raw’ ah) THE LORD MY SHEPHERD
THE LORD MY SHEPHERD
We find God as Jehovah Raah in Psalm 23.
The word raah is derived from the word ro eh meaning “shepherd” in Hebrew.
Translated it carries the idea of a shepherd’s tender and life-giving care for his flock. The condition of sheep is in direct correlation to the care of the shepherd. The very life of the sheep depends on the shepherd because sheep are animals that do not do well if left on their own.
Here we see God as our life-giver, our caregiver. Jehovah Raah is also the idea of an intimate companion or friend.
Psalm 23 begins…
“The LORD is my shepherd I shall not want.” And the rest of the psalm tells us why. We are the sheep and the LORD is our shepherd. And our benefits are many if we know and follow our Great Shepherd.
JEHOVAH TSIDKENU (yeh-ho-vah’ tsid-kay’-noo) THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS
Jehovah Tsidkenu appears twice in the Old Testament.
Tsidkenu is the Hebrew word to be “stiff” or to be “straight”. Because the Hebrews used concrete imagery to describe things, the word righteousness is portrayed as being “straight”.
Being straight or righteous has to do with standing up before God and literally being in right standing with Him! It’s the idea that there is peace (shalom) between God and us.
We cannot be righteous on our own for the bible tells us…
“All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind, our sins sweep us away.” Isaiah 64:6
On our own, we can not be in right standing with God so we need God in the person of Jesus Christ to exchange our filthy rags of self-righteousness for his gleaming robes of righteousness.
And this is only done when we bow our knee in belief and submission to Jesus as our LORD and Savior. When Jesus becomes our Adoni.
JEHOVAH SHAMMAH (yeh-ho-vah’ shawm’-maw) THE LORD IS THERE
Jehovah Shammah only appears once in the Old Testament in Ezekiel 48:35. Shammah is derived from the word “sham” to be there. It is a name of great hope.
Jehovah Shammah is the name given to the new Jerusalem, brilliant and glorified and restored.
It’s when God will return to His temple to dwell among all His people forevermore. It’s a name that brings the hope of being with the LORD in all eternity because God is there.
Just as we cry Maranatha, come quickly LORD Jesus, we also look for Jehovah Shammah!
We have learned a lot of names over the last three weeks! Studying these words and committing them to memory would
Here is the list of God’s names that you will find in the NAMES OF GOD series. I hope you will use them as a reference, learn them, and cry out to the Lord using these meaningful names.

Thank you for reminding me of the immeasurable, infinite, holy God! His Names are such wonderful truth of who He really is to us! Thank you for taking the time to point me to Him!
Few Christians seem to know that Jehovah is God’s name. My mom said women in her bible study group actually made fun of the name Jehovah! I have an American Standard Bible from around the early 1900’s and the men who were translating it put the name Jehovah back every where it originally was. The thing amazing about this is that they stated that they knew this would offend some people! Why?????
Hello Carol, I’m from Germany and my English is not so well. But I try to explain why this name of God is not used so often in new translations.
I use a “Elberfelder” translation. And they explain why they translate JEHOVA with LORD .
Because no one of the old people in Israel used this name. The name of God: JAHWE was so holy to them that they wanted to be shure, not to speak out . So they mixed the names JAHWEH JHWH) with ADONAJ to remind the readers to say Adonaj instead of Jahwe. People who didn’t know this rule, had to read Jehovah. So, in the “Elberfelder” they changed Jehovah into LORD.
I hope, you can understand….

I have been studying with a Jehovah Witness in effort to better understand their belief system vs. mine.
She recently discussed how their bible put Jehovah as God’s name back into the bible as it was in its original language. Found that of interest.
I will be sharing all the different names for God with my 19 year old granddaughter, so she can learn them too. Bless you for providing this three part lesson.

Love these posts.
Yes, the original Hebrew and Greek give us a much more detailed look at exactly what the Bible says. My favorite online study tool is biblehub.com. Hope this helps.
