Guest Room Makeover Plans

Do you have a room that needs a little help looking its best? We do too! In this post, you will see the plans for our guest room makeover and learn helpful tips and tricks for creating a great space for guests and family.
PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

Do you have a room that is not looking its best? Our smallest guest room is a mismatch of furniture that is really too big for this room. I’ve done all my homework and we are slowly transforming this pretty little room into a space our guests will hopefully love! Here’s my decorating process and a peek at what to expect soon!

This guest room is primarily used by our two young grandsons. Anderson is five and Alexander is four. And someday McAllister who is seven months will join them.

Here’s how I go about making over a room, any room in our home!

THE GUEST ROOM

Here’s the room so far…

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

THE DECOR STYLE

Like all the rooms here at Tanglewood, the guest room will work with much of the furnishings in our home.

I love being able to pull a chair from the family room or a lamp from the basement!

This room will also be Transitional Style with a little more of a Farmhouse 2 edge!

THE VIBE

I wanted this room to have a tailored vibe. Even though our grandsons will stay here more than any other guests it should be comfortable for any of our visitors and not juvenile feeling at all.

My mom will probably choose this room to stay in. She is so fun and adventurous and I can just see her enjoying this guest room.

Like our other guest room at the Tanglewood House, we want our guests to feel at home and a bit pampered too!

It’s important for a guest room, even a small one, to have space. So as I plan this room I want to keep having enough “moving around” space in mind.

Guest rooms with cramped space and a closet full of outcast clothes and other stuff are not that enjoyable to stay in! I speak from experience!

THE COLOR PALETTE

The first thing I always start with when I decorate is the color palette! Choosing the perfect color palette for a room and then sticking to it will go a long way to guarantee a very cohesive and pretty look!

Neutral colors dominate this room’s color palette, like the rest of our home. With this guest room, I’m adding a bit of blue! Not too much, just a nice accent!

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

Here is my color palette! It’s a good idea when you choose a color palette you know a few things.

  1. Choose a color palette you love and don’t stray away from it. I say, “stay in your lane”! Don’t offroad!
  2. Know if the colors you choose are warm or cool. Mixing warm and cool colors together make for an interesting color palette but choose 80% warm and 20% cool. Or vice versa. Can You Mix Warm And Cool Colors is a very very informative post about choosing and using warm and cool colors in your home!
  3. Decide what colors are predominant and which colors will be accent colors.

This guest room will have lots of white. Three white walls and the patterned wallpaper on the fourth wall has a white background. Also, each bed will have a white coverlet and the curtains are mostly white. The chair in this room is a creamy off-white. We have the chair in our family room right now and it looks so pretty there. So I know it will work in the guest room.

Black also plays a noticeable role! The beds are black, and the pattern of the wallpaper is black. And much of the metal in the room is also black.

I’m still working on the tobacco color. I LOVE the white/black/tobacco color combination!

The accent color for this room is a muddied chambray blue and a warmish suede blue.

THE PATTERNS

I love a mix of patterns to bring interest and texture to a room. This bedroom has a very tight color palette and lots of white. So to punch up the visual effect I chose a black and white peel and stick wallpaper to act as a backdrop for the beds.

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

It’s important to mix the proportions of patterns in a room. Large, small, and medium patterns work nicely together.

THE BED

I have always loved the look of these beautiful, minimal iron beds! They have strong, unfussy lines and because the one I chose is a platform bed it does not need a box spring. That means we can put a very nice Tempurpedic mattress on it or something equivalent.

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

I am so so picky about mattresses! I have slept on my share of bad guest room mattresses so a great mattress in the guest room is a must!

This guest room is perfect for twin beds! They will be covered with a white matelasse coverlet and a chambray blue pin ticking quilt will be folded at the end of the bed. The small plaid accent pillow will rest against the chambray pillow sham.

I like the handsome striped cube. It adds another layer of simple color and pattern so I’m putting one at the bottom of each bed. I originally was thinking of adding a big wicker basket with a lid to the bottom of the beds but I thought it would be a bit heavy for the room.

BETWEEN THE BEDS

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

The space between the beds is just wide enough to add a small chest.

I have a family treasure in the basement I’ve been waiting to use somewhere in our home. It’s a beautiful jelly cupboard that belonged to my beloved grandmother, Nani!

My mother had it refinished and used it in her home until she moved and then gifted it to me. We come from very humble, hardworking beginnings so this jelly cupboard is so precious to me.

I love the thought of my little grandsons sleeping in a room with something that was their great great grandmother’s!

If for some reason the jelly cupboard makes the room look too cramped I’ll get the little chest in the image above.

I’m adding a simple round mirror to bring in more light and just the basics on the top of the chest.

OTHER DECOR

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

The part of decorating I like best is adding accent decor! It brings a room to life. It also supports the color palette and vibe of a room.

For me, this decorating step should evolve. I add and edit accent decor all the time in the rooms in our home.

I have a feeling that lots of decor from the basement will find its way to the guest room!

I’M STILL THINKING ABOUT THE RUG

PLANS FOR A SMALL GUEST ROOM

The rug at this point is a big question mark! I would like a little color on the floor but I’m going to have to see the room all pulled together before I decide on a direction to take the rug.

If it weren’t for the wallpaper I would choose the second rug from the left. It has all the colors in my color palette. It’s a gorgeous rug!

So the rug will be a surprise, to you and me too!

MAKING OVER A ROOM- A SIMPLE PROCESS

I hope this post has helped you see the thought process that goes into making over a room, even a small project like our guest room.

Here is a little rundown of what is important to me when working on changes to any room.

  • Decor Style and Color Palette should be like a filter. Everything that goes into a room should be filtered through these two things. If anything in the room does not work with the style or color palette, it does not go in the room. It’s that easy! Here’s my mantra… Stay In Your Decorating Lane! No veering off in another direction or offroading!
  • The vibe or feel of a room is important to think about. In this bedroom, tailored and comfortable were the two words I want our guests to experience. Use the vibe of a room as a filter too!
  • Create a mood board (I create mine in PicMonkey) to get a better vision at how a room will look.
  • Accent decor like pillows, throws, plants, and more give life to a room and create a wonderful happy lived-in look.
  • Remember, a room will change and evolve. Keep working on it! Decorating is never done! Keep decor fresh!

  1. I am sure your guestroom will be beautiful when finished but I speak from experience when I tell you how little boys can create quite a mess.I found silly putty on my quilts and rug after they went home and where they got it I have no idea. We had a wonderful time while they were here but next time I may use some less loved comforters. I fear for your white bedspreads. Child proofing can make for a more fun visit!!

    1. White bedspreads are amazing! They wash up so easily and look great. Yes, little kids are a mess! I embrace it! And then clean it up! LOL!

  2. Where can the floor lamp be purchased?
    Thanks!

From the color palates, the beautiful furniture and pops of decor to your patient explanation of your process; everything is PERFECT! Can’t wait to see the finished project. Can I sign up for a visit? ?

  4. Your guest room looks like another beauty.I love the color pallet and the iron beds.Good luck with deciding on the rug.I’m sure whatever you pick will be a winner.

  5. I love the wallpaper, but couldn’t see a link for it. Would you be able to tell me where it can be found?

  6. I love that wallpaper. Where did you get it? Is it easy to adhere to the walls? Any special hints or considerations before tackling a wallpapering project?

    Thanks!

  7. Love your design, so smart to stay away from a juvenile theme. Kids outgrow them so fast. I laughed at “don’t off-road”. It’s easy to get pulled in different directions. I started a den project thinking I wanted dark and moody but I saw a large light and modern picture and ended up with soft blues, cream and light grays, more me, very happy.

  8. Hi Yvonne!

I love your style. I bought a new home in November and am transitioning to neutral and then just adding color for the seasons and holidays. Where are the curtains in your living room from–white with thin grey horizontal stripe. Just what I need!

    Thanks!

  9. It’s going to be lovely! Just like the rest of your home. Can’t wait to see the final reveal.

  10. I am curious about the wallpaper. Are you hanging it? And how will you address the wall texture? And the room will eventually be for 3 visiting grandchildren? Is one of the beds a double? Thank you.

    1. Our walls are smooth so it will be easy to hang peel and stick wallpaper. Yes, eventually we will have three little boys in this room. We might put a trundle under one bed. Hope this answers your questions.

      1. Yes, thank you Yvonne. The trundle is a great idea. Will remember that as an option. The smooth walls are interesting. I’m trying to visualize walls smooth enough for wallpaper. I know when planning for wallpaper initially in a new build the walls are treated differently so they are smooth.

  11. Do you have a source for that little round metal side table? ?
