WHY I LOVE TO MAKE A SEASONAL WREATH
My life marks time by moving along from one season to the next. I think this is because I was a primary teacher! Every season was celebrated!
And I still revel in the celebration and welcoming of a new season.
One of the first things I do at the end of a season is making a new wreath for my front door! I think of a wreath as a big hello and welcome to all who pass by as well as a nod to the season!
This year I am so so excited for spring! Winter has not been kind! It’s been very windy and cold and the skies have been stingy and not brought the snow I love so much!
I saw my first robin redbreast today. And that is always a big event in my life. Things like cherry blossom wreaths and robin redbreasts are harbingers of spring! And simple things like this bring me great joy!
Why not join me in enjoying the little things in life and making a spring wreath for your front door!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
The list of things to make a cherry blossom spring wreath is so simple. You can see images and links for florals at the bottom of the page.
Here’s the shortlist of materials…
- two grapevine wreaths- I use 18-inch wreaths for my front door (see them HERE)
- zip ties or sturdy florist wire (see them HERE and HERE)
- scissors (see it HERE)
- wire cutters (see it HERE)
- faux cherry blossoms- see the bottom of the post for suggestions
- hot glue gun (see it HERE)
- hot glue (see them HERE)
I love pink cherry blossoms. But if pink is not your thing, this spring wreath DIY would look beautiful using white cherry, apple blossoms, or even forsythia!
HOW TO MAKE A CHERRY BLOSSOM WREATH
I love this pretty, feminine, spring-inspired wreath because it is quintessentially spring! It was so simple to put together that even if you are not crafty you can make this wreath!
HERE’S WHAT TO DO FIRST
A sturdy grapevine wreath is a must when making this spring wreath DIY or any seasonal wreath.
Doubling the grapevine wreaths is a designer secret! I loved to frequent a designer showroom known for its beautiful wreaths and noticed that all the grapevine wreath bases were doubled. That was a secret that made such a difference!
So I started wiring two grapevine wreaths together and voila, all the wreaths that I created started looking so much better.
I just put one wreath on top of the other and connect the wreaths together with clear zip ties or wire. I tie them together at 2:00, 4:00, and 10:00 on the wreaths.
And where another tip: Because I usually take my wreaths apart after each I have a doubled grapevine wreath base ready to use again! It’s so economical.
If you look closely you can see the zip ties fastening the two grapevine wreaths together in the image below.
ADDING CHERRY BLOSSOMS
The next and last part of making this pretty spring wreath is to arrange the cherry blossoms on the wreath.
And this part is so super easy!
The first thing to do is decide if you want a wreath that is entirely covered with flowers or if you want a bit of the grapevine to show.
Either way, this wreath would look beautiful!
Because it is my early spring wreath I wanted some of the grapevine wood to show reminiscent of a cherry blossom tree.
So I started on one side of the wreath adding sprigs of cherry blossoms, pushing their stems into the grapevine wreath.
Most of these cherry blossoms had long enough stems that I did not need to add hot glue many to hold them onto the wreath.
If you are hot gluing the cherry blossoms to the wreath, arrange them on the wreath, and when you like how they are positioned glue the stem to the grapevine wreath.
Continue adding more cherry blossoms to the wreath, filling in cherry blossoms on the inside of the wreath and letting some overhand the outside of the wreath as shown below.
Continue adding cherry blossoms, working around the wreath until you are happy with how the wreath looks.
I like to give any wreaths I make a good shake. And if any of the items on the wreath falls off I know I need to hot glue them on better. This will keep your wreath intact and looking nice all season long!
And here’s another tip: If you have hot glue “spiders webs” ruining the look of your wreath,
blow the air of a hairdryer set on a warm, low setting over your wreath and those pesky hot glue spider webs will melt away.
HANGING YOUR SPRING WREATH
All that is left to do is to hang your beautiful wreath on your front door!
I’ve been asked so many times about how I hang wreaths on our front door. Here at Tanglewood and at StoneGable Bobby screwed a hook into the door for me to hang all my wreaths on.
I hope you will give this spring wreath DIY a try! How pretty would this wreath look on your front door?
Happy almost Spring!
Good Morning, Love the wreath and would like to ask a question please. Do you have an average height that you normally use on your front door when hanging your wreath? Wait daily for the next idea. Take care and stay safe.
I don’t have an average height. I just used the upper crossbar as a guide for putting a screw in the door for the wreath.
I love cherry blossom flowers and love the wreath. Happy spring. Jean
