Wreaths are a big investment if you buy big designer wreaths! But you can make this one for a whole lot less! And how fun to make something yourself!

One thing to keep in mind when making this easy wreath diy…

KEEP IT SIMPLE AND LET IT LOOK NATURAL!

Your wreath will look so much nicer if you let the leaves “fall where they may”! Isn’t that what happens in nature? Don’t try to be too perfect!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THE FALL WREATH

MATERIALS TO MAKE A FALL WREATH

There is not a long or complicated list of materials to make this wreath. That’s what makes this wreath so easy to create!

Just a note about the materials. I use my grapevine wreaths over and over again! After the season I take all the seasonal decor off of the wreaths and store it away for later.

Then the grapevine wreaths is ready for the next seasonal wreath I make.

LEAVES FOR A FALL WREATH

This is a very economical way to make wreaths for each season.

BEST WREATH MAKING TIP EVER!

Ready for the best wreath making tip ever? Okay, here it is…

Wire or zip tie two grapevine wreaths together in three places on the wreath. I usually wire them even distances apart.

Can you see where I wired these wreaths together? I used green florist’s wire. That was soooo long ago. This wreath has seen many seasons and many kinds of decor!

I think I’ll zip tie them when fall is over.

GRAPEVINE WREATHS

Ta-Da!!!!

I know wiring two wreaths together sounds way too easy, but what a HUGE difference it will make!

This is a designer tip! Wiring two wreaths together will give your wreath a beautiful full look and also give it heft! It will have a “presence”. Seriously, give it a try!

ADD THE LEAVES

ADDING LEAVES TO A GRAPEVINE WREATH

This is so so easy!

I simply laid the leaves (with their long stems on) around the wreath and when they looked nice I zip tied them onto the wreath.

I did this in about 5 minutes!

Just remember to cut the ends of the zip ties and hide the ties holding the leaves onto the wreath.

IT’S ALL ABOUT FLUFFING A WREATH

FALL LEAF WREATH ON A DOOR

Fluffing is my word for taking the time to make sure all the faux elements look amazing! Separate the leaves, fill in the empty spots on the wreath that may not have enough leaves. And generally give the wreath a big once-over!

So, when I hung my wreath on our front door I “fluffed” all the leaves around the wreath to make them look full! But I kept it a little imperfect.

This is such an easy fall wreath diy, right? And it’s such a pretty, attention-grabbing wreath too!

EXTRA EMBELLISHMENTS

I like my wreath just like it is. Natural!

But you can add other things to this fall wreath.

Here are a few things you can use to embellish your wreath with…

  • a big bow
  • pumpkins
  • groups of acorns or pinecones
  • a second kind off fall leaves
  • feathers
  • cut out words, like ” it’s fall”
  • bittersweet
  • any other fall-ish thing

Either wire them on or use hot glue to fix them to the wreath.

HOW TO HANG A WREATH ON YOUR DOOR

PRETTY FALL LEAF WREATH

I get asked all the time how I hang my wreaths on my front door.

I just got so tired of trying to hang wreaths up with ribbon or invisible fishing line or even an over the door hanger that scratched the door!

So, I put a hook right in the door.

HOOK ON A FRONT DOOR FOR HANGING WREATHS

I’m not sure what kind of hook this is. I think we got it for our bathrobes in the bathroom but used a different one. So this went in the odds and ends box. And that’s where found it!

Oh, it works so perfectly!

I hope you will make this pretty fall leaf wreath for your front door!

  1. Hi Yvonne! I love your leaf wreath and all your tips! Speaking of fall leaves, can you tell me where you bought the fall leaves you used in your dough bowl you featured a few days ago? I’ve looked and looked for this kind of fall leaf stems to no avail. The colors and realistic look is just what I want! I’d do appreciate it. Thank you! Have a blessed day!

    1. I found them on a garland that I found locally. But the little green leaves I featured would work too.

  2. Such a simple idea for wreath making. Thank you. I have used grapevine wreaths in the past but found that they always scratched the finish on the door. How can I avoid the scratches?

    1. You can add some kind of backing to the wreath. If your door gets a lot of wind or elements I can see how scratches would happen.

  3. Your leaf wreath is beautiful! Would a Command hook work on the door?

    1. Jennie Johnson says:

I’ve used a large Command hook for my front door wreaths for about five years now and they work great!

I’ve made several of your wreaths, Yvonne, (the mini corn wreath is my favorite!) and I love that you do this for each new season. Thanks again for all you do to bring quality content to us as your readers!

      1. THANKS Jennie! I’ve used command hooks for outdoor spaces too. And I have never had a problem.

    2. I would use a command hook for outdoor use if it is under a roof or cover. I’ve used them for years under the conditions I stated and have never had a problem.

      1. Thank you Yvonne and Jennie for your responses. My front door is under a porch so it is protected. I’ve hesitated to hang a wreath on my door, afraid it will scratch the paint when the door is opened & closed.

  4. Beautiful, simple wreath! Double wreath, huh? I’m going to try it along with a Command hook. My wreaths have always looked so flat & the over the door hangar always scratch the paint off of my beautiful door. Thanks again for the amazing tips!

  5. I like the wreath… beautiful. But I love your idea of just a permanent hook! Clever and simple!
