Can you believe it is almost December? What a special time of the year! It’s Christmas land here at StoneGable! I’m so excited to share lots of Christmas ideas and inspiration in the next few weeks! But now, let’s talk about what’s on and off the menu this week…

This Christmas at our new Tanglewood home we will be hosting lots of family. And some until after the New Year! So that means lots and lots of food. And to cut down on spending my days in the kitchen (ugh) I’m making meals and/or prepping meals and freezing them!

So early this week I’ll be doing one of my favorite things… perusing cookbooks and Pinterest for easy and delicious freezable meals for a crowd and lots of soups too!

But for now, here’s what’s on the menu this week…

MONDAY- SOUP DAY

Oh my goodness this soup will be such a hit! We love mushrooms and anything creamy! I favor my Hungarian roots and remember my Nani’s delicious Hungarian mushroom soup!

Perfect rustic, peasant food!

Thank you Kelly, from Montana Happy!

TUESDAY

I am so so excited to make these amazing looking Polenta Cakes from Vegan Heritage Press. They look glorious! And this is a very easy recipe!

I think I can double this recipe and freeze the polenta cakes for a meal when the family is here at Christmas!

WEDNESDAY

Ina Garten and I are on the same cookbook page when it comes to a great roasted chicken! I roast one often and it is soooooo much better than the store-bought rotisserie kind (except for Costco).

Roasting a perfect chicken is easy and makes my whole home smell glorious! We eat every single bit of the chicken and save the carcass for homemade stock.

This is such an old recipe but a reader favorite!

THURSDAY- SLOW COOKER DAY

Today’s recipe looks absolutely amazing! It has lots of ingredients to give this soup great depth of flavor so I’ll prep what I can while making dinner on Wednesday night.

Don’t you love a soup that eats like a meal? And this is the type of dish that will just get better and better. So leftovers will be amazing!!!!!

One tip… don’t add the pasta to the soup. Make it according to the directions on the box and keep it separate. When you are ready to eat the soup add the cold pasta to the bottom of the bowl and pour the soup over it. Then it will not get soggy and the soup will warm up the pasta. My Nani taught me that!

This gorgeous recipe comes from Chris at The Cafe Sucre Farine.

FRIDAY

The sound of this pizza make me swoon! A big thank you to Sally at Sally’s Baking Addiction for this yummy pizza!

I’m going to make this pizza on a pre-made cauliflower pizza crust. But I’ll be trying Sally’s recipe for her pizza crust when I make homemade pizza again! Sally has some great tips for creating the perfect, crisp pizza!

Wednesday’s leftover chicken will come in handy in this gorgeous pizza and Costco pesto will work just fine too.

SATURDAY

Just the word “piccata” makes my mouth water! Oh, how I love me a good piccata sauce!

Just wait till you see Aimee Mars foodie blog! Oh, just gorgeous! Thank you for this amazing recipe!

I’ll make this beautiful recipe sans heavy cream. I use half evaporated milk and half greek yogurt for a lot of my recipes that call for heavy cream or half and half. I think it is just as good.

SUNDAY- COMPANY’S COMING

We are having two other couples for dinner tonight. And I’m serving a bast from the past vintage dinner!

The pot roast is a super easy, company-worthy dinner! And it’s made in one pot! The flavor is beefy and the meat just falls apart. No wonder I love chuck roast so much!

I’ll serve this delicious pot roast in big shallow bowls and just to make it extra pretty I put it over a square of puff pastry and top it off with fresh parsley!

The salad is one my Daddy loved and the dessert was a favorite in my husband’s family.

I’m channeling my Donna Reed and putting on a 1950’s dinner even though this was a good bit before my time! LOL!

SWEET TREAT OF THE WEEK

This week I’m starting my Christmas cookies.

I used to make a cookie tray that would rival Martha Stewart, but I found we gravitated just a few favorites! So why do the extra work?

This year I’ll make up the dough and roll it into logs and freeze. That way we can cut them and bake them and have fresh cookies.

Little hands will help me make cookies this year! Oh, what a joy!

My VERY favorite cookie is a sugar cookie I’ve been for literally decades! Take my word for it… this cookie is the best of the best!

  1. Everything looks so yummy, and definitely some comfort food. I also have maternal grandparents who emigrated from Hungary. Theirs is an amazing story of love, strong work ethic, as well as hardship. Thanks for the recipes
    , and always, the encouragement.

    Hi Yvonne,
Everything looks so tasty. I’ve saved a few of the recipes to try. With the pizza on the cauliflower crust, do you have a recipe for that? Because when I clicked on the recipe it was for a standard pizza crust.

    1. I’m buying a cauliflower crust. I find them in the freezer section of my local grocery store

  3. It all looks so good! I’d love to try the pizza recipe, just not sure my cowboy husband would go for the cauliflower crust. Maybe if he didn’t know…We grew up thinking our paternal grandparents were from Italy. My sister n law found out just a few years ago they both immigrated from Hungary! I’ve been interested in studying my Hungarian roots – especially the foods!

    1. Please look at the delicious real pizza crust from Sally’s Baking Addiction. It looks so good!
Welcome to the Hungarian Roots Family! I was taught some delicious recipes by my Nani!

I have tried to copy “My Favorite Sugar Cookie” numerous times, but it won’t copy. I copy other recipes of your, but for some reason I cannot copy this one. It looks so good!

    1. Sorry Carolyn, you are right. I just tried to copy it. You may just have to copy and paste until I get it fixed.
