Best Butter Topped Beer Bread
Beer bread is our favorite bread. It’s so easy to make! No kneading, no proofing, and only a few ingredients! It’s a quick bread filled with a great yeasty flavor that has the best crumb, crust, and soft middle. YUM!
I’ve made beer bread for decades! I love how it makes the whole house smell like you were slaving away to make bread all day!
It’s our secret that this quick bread is just so easy!
It has a buttery top and wonderful crisp crust! Beer bread is a rustic bread with a beautifully rich taste!
This bread gets its flavor from one bottle or any kind of beer! And if you don’t want to use beer you can use a soft drink.
MAKING THIS EASY BREAD A GREAT SUCCESS
Here are a few things that will help you make this bread turn out perfectly!
Add all the dry ingredients to a large bowl first and stir with a whisk. This will ensure all the ingredients are incorporated evenly.
All your ingredients should be the same temperature, beer included. That is what should be done in a perfect world. If I get a yen for beer bread I grab a beer from the outside frig and make it. I don’t wait for it to come to room temp.
Add the beer to the dry ingredients first and then add the oil.
Mix the wet ingredients just until they comes together. Don’t over mix!
Put the beer bread batter in a well greased loaf pan. I like to use butter, it makes the crust crisp and delicous!
Make sure to pour the melted butter over the top of the batter. Don’t skip this step!
Cut the slices of your beer bread on the thick side. The bread will hold up better.
OTHER QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT NEED TO KNOW
Beer bread is a very forgiving recipe. Here are some questions you might be asking…
Can I use any type of beer?
Absolutely. I use Yuengling beer because it is one we have on hand and it is also made about an hour from where we live! We buy local!
Honestly, the cheaper the better! Just make sure you use 12 oz. of beer.
Can I use another liquid if I don’t want to use beer?
Yes, you can use almost any other effervescent soft drink. The flavor will taste a bit different and sweeter. But hey, that is good too!
If you can, give the beer a try! You will be hooked.
Again use 12 oz.
What size loaf pan should I use?
I used an 8 x 6 loaf pan, but you can also use one that is just one size smaller.
Can I freeze beer bread?
Yes, it freezes beautifully! Just wrap it in plastic wrap when it is completely cooled and then in aluminum foil and stick it in a zip-type freezer bag.
Can I make 2 loaves at once?
You can, but you need to make them separately. Why not make two batches while you have the ingredients out!
What is your favorite way to eat beer bread, Yvonne?
Well, how nice of you to ask! I like to eat it warm with butter or toasted! I love to know I have day-old beer bread in the house so I can pop a slice it in the toaster and have it for breakfast! Oh, happy day!

I am so glad that you shared your recipe. I love beer bread and I haven’t thought about making it in years. Yours looks so good!
Hi Yvonne! Your recipe made my boys so happy during quarantine! We had limited supplies so I improvised and used an orange LaCroix, the zest of a couple of Cutie tangerines, and coconut oil instead of vegetable oil. It was a huge hit! I made this many weeks straight and froze the slices so they could have them for breakfast. I am sure it would be great with lemon as well. I also wanted to note for those with food allergies it is great to find a recipe with no egg, and if there is a dairy allergy Earth Balance works great! We have both egg and dairy allergies in our house, so this recipe was perfect. Thank you for always sharing the most delicious recipes!!
I’m thrilled you found this recipe! I’m going to try your orange version, it sounds yummy!
I make this all the time but use 3 cups Self rising flour, 1/2 cup sugar & 1bottle of beer. Mix together. i melt 1 stick of butter leaving 1/2 in bottom of pan and adding other to top of batter!
