MY CHRISTMAS WREATH STORY

I’ve been making my own front door wreaths for decades. There is just something so satisfying about making a wreath!

I just love DIY wreaths!

I’ve also studied more designer wreaths than I can count to figure out what makes them look so full and over the top beautiful!

And over the years I figured out some designer secrets and processes that make their wreaths so gorgeous!

Of all the wreaths I make, Christmas wreaths are my favorite! There is a whole lot of holiday spirit packed into a Christmas wreath hanging on a front door!

The wreath I made for our front door this year is a bit different than the ones that have hung on my door in Christmases past.

For many years I used live greens and made a live evergreen wreath. I found a very easy method for making them. Here is a very old (and the pictures are horrible) post with great instructions for HOW TO MAKE A LIVE EVERGREEN WREATH. I bet you will think, “now why didn’t I think of that”!

But in recent past, I’ve made faux green wreaths for my front door!

The Christmas wreath I am sharing today is made with a grapevine wreath. And part of the grapevine wreath is exposed. I’ve never made a Christmas wreath like this before!

WHY HANG A CHRISTMAS WREATH ON YOUR DOOR?

Christmas wreaths have a long and rich history. Here is a very short version of why we hang Christmas wreaths on our front doors…

Although wreaths have been around for thousands of years, the custom of bringing evergreens into a home started sometime in the 16th century. This modern tradition started in Germany when people began to bring live evergreen trees into their homes during Christmas. They would shape the trees to look like a triangle symbolizing the trinity and make wreaths from the excess.

Wreaths are a symbol of eternal life. They also symbolized God’s divine perfection. It had no beginning and has no end.

Today a Christmas wreath is a common symbol of Christmas!

WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE THIS CHRISTMAS WREATH

This wreath could not be simpler!

Here’s what you will need…

• two 18-22 inch grapevine wreaths
• wire or zip ties
• ribbon for bow (3-4 yards)
• sprays of faux greens
• berries
• hot-glue

You probably have some of these craft supplies in your craft/decor stash! I did have two grapevine wreaths, wire, the ribbon for the bow, and the berries.

I found four large sprays of snow-covered evergreen branches with some berries and small pine cones at Hobby Lobby. They were on sale for $4.99 each. So this whole Christmas Wreath DIY cost me $20.00!

With all the sales going on right now this wreath can be very reasonable.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE THIS WREATH?

Diy Christmas wreaths can often be a bit of a time commitment but this wreath was so easy it took me less than 30 minutes to make.

I just love that I could make something that has a designer look in so little time!

LET’S MAKE A CHRISTMAS WREATH

This wreath is messy to make so I covered my table with my project dropcloth. You might want to do the same.

CREATING A BASE FOR THE HOLIDAY WREATH

One of the biggest secrets for making a designer wreath is to double the wreath form. I stacked two wreaths of the same and used wire to fix them together. My favorite way to do this is with zip ties but I ran out of them.

I find binding the wreaths together at 2, 6 and 10 o’clock on the wreath keeps them tightly together… another designer wreath secret!

ADD THE BOW FIRST

Most wreaths start by adding greens to the base. But for this weath the bow goes on first!

A bow adds so much personality… YOUR personality to a wreath! And it goes a long way to create a big dose of color or texture or pattern and certainly prettiness!

Bows can make a wreath!

For this Christmas wreath DIY, I chose a black and white plaid ribbon. I love black and white plaid! And the colors for our Christmas porch are black,green and red. And this wreath will carry the colors on to our door!

Because the bow is centered at the top of the wreath, it makes sense to add it first.

I made a big loopy bow and held it together with a long piece of wire. Then I found the nicest orientation of the wreath (because grapevine wreaths are never really round) and wired the bow to the wreath.

Another designer tip for bow placement is to tie the bow high on the wreath. If you center the bow in the middle of the wreath or lower it will look very droopy! Trust me on this!

HOW TO ADD THE GREENS

I think this is the easy part! Because of the fabulous big snowy sprays I found I could just stick them into the wreath and not have to add any additional greens.

I did have some pine needles on hand in case I needed to fill any area of the wreath in. But it was so full I did not need to add any other Christmas greens.

The sprays of greenery had very long ends. So long I cut some of the ends off.

Then it was easy to stick the end of the deep into the right side of the wreath next to the bow. Wow! By just adding one spray the Christmas wreath began to take shape.

I did the same with a snowy spray on the left side of the wreath.

It was easy to add another spray below the first greens on either side of the wreath to complete the wreath!

ADDING THE BERRIES

The greens I chose already had blue sprays of berries on them but I wanted to add a little bit of red to the wreath to work with my color palette. I found some pretty red berries with icy crystals on them and added a few clumps to each side of the wreath.

FLUFFING AND FINAL PRODUCT

The process of making sure all the branches are well placed, the berries are in place, and the bow is secured and looks perfect is what I call fluffing!

Don’t pass over this process! It will make the difference from a nice wreath to a stunning designer one.

I like to fluff when a wreath is hanging on the front door.

Gently coax every green into place working with the curve of the wreath. Separate any greenery that has been stuck together and straighten out any crooked stems!

And make sure your bow is perfectly fluffed and centered on the wreath!

WHAT OTHER CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTATION CAN I USE ON A CHRISTMAS WREATH?

Be creative! The major players on this wreath are the bow and the greens. But you can add a personal touch by adding things you love to your wreath!

• faux incense cedar, juniper, boxwood or other pretty faux greens

CAN I USE THIS WREATH OUTSIDE

I am using my wreath on my front door. We have a covered porch so the wreath is pretty safe from most weather. So the answer is yes, you can use this wreath outside IF it is protected.

And you can also spay your wreath with a fixative that preserves it from the elements.
